MOUNTAIN HOME SANCTUARY:

615 Oak Manor Drive
Fairfax, CA 94930

A Vision Realized

Open Circle Center founder, Rob Schwartz, had a dream: to create a sanctuary for spiritual growth and community in peaceful surroundings where the natural beauty of the land would match his vision.

He found exactly what he was looking for in this 39-acre property set amid groves of live oak, madrone and bay laurel in the rolling hills above the town of Fairfax in Marin County. With the purchase of the undeveloped land in 2018, Rob’s vision became a living reality. Even before any structures were built, Rob and his partner, Rosie Siscon, began offering outdoor gatherings led by well-known spiritual teachers affiliated with Open Circle Center, a nonsectarian organization that sponsors events throughout the Bay Area and on the internet worldwide.

Though Rob passed away in 2023, he lived just long enough to see his magnificent vision become manifest with the completion of the home and cottage, opening them to gatherings for spiritual teaching and practice. Since his passing, Rosie has sustained his vision, stewarding the land and buildings as a sacred refuge.

Today, Mountain Home Sanctuary’s magnificent 3500-square-foot main building hosts frequent daylong and weekend retreats guided by a growing roster of esteemed spiritual teachers. In addition to its large communal space with a sweeping view of Mt. Tamalpais, the structure features five bedrooms, four bathrooms, an open kitchen adjacent to the common area, and four outdoor decks where guests can gather to soak up the views. Daylong retreats and events can accommodate as many as 50 participants at one time.

Realtors have estimated the value of the main building at $3.2 million.

A second building, a one-bedroom, 720-square-foot cottage with high ceilings, lies across the broad driveway from the main house. Realtors have estimated its value at $1.1 million.

Cleared paths offering spectacular vistas, including views of San Francisco Bay and the city beyond, wind up the hill from the retreat center to Fairfax Ridge and a network of trails connecting the property to land designated as Open Space by the towns of Fairfax and San Anselmo.

Moreover, in contrast to many properties located in the hills above Fairfax, Mountain Home Sanctuary offers exceptionally easy access via Oak Manor Drive, a wide, two-lane, well-maintained road with plentiful parking on either side.  The two buildings are also readily accessible via a paved driveway, with a large parking area at the top.

The Land

Unlike much undeveloped land in Fairfax and Marin County, the 39 acres that comprise Mountain Home Sanctuary offer a future owner the opportunity to unlock value or offset carrying costs through a thoughtful land division, without diminishing the serenity or intrinsic worth of the remaining estate. Three acres have been earmarked for subdivision, including a one-acre parcel accessible from Sir Francis Drake Boulevard that has been designated for 20-29 units of affordable housing. A second acre off Oak Manor Drive has been allotted for sectioning into two one-half acre parcels for low-median income residents, each with a single family home and ADU. The remaining acre, off Oak Manor Drive near the topmost border of the Sanctuary, has been allocated for four one-quarter acre lots for middle income residents, each with its own house and ADU.

Representatives from MALT (Marin Agricultural Land Trust) have also identified Mountain Home Sanctuary as an ideal setting for cultivating endangered wild plants, such as white sage, yerba santa, sagebrush, and aloe vera, making it ripe for agricultural development and funding.

The Financial Picture and Needs Going Forward

Since August 2025 Mountain Home Sanctuary has been under the protection of Chapter 11. The property carries a secured debt of $2.9 million, as well as unsecured debt of $700,000, representing attorneys’ fees, back taxes, real estate fees, and personal loans. Foreclosure at an unspecified future date is a possibility, making it a matter of great urgency to find an investor or group of investors who recognize the extraordinary potential of the property.

The Trust for Private Land  (TPL) estimates the value of entire property with the development opportunities to be between $5,000,000 and $10,000,000.

It is our hope to inspire visionary investors who appreciate the property’s unique opportunities for development, while also being dedicated to preserving Mountain Home Sanctuary as a retreat center for spiritual unfolding and sacred community for generations to come.
